Return to Innocence: Biblical Ethics
of Homosexual Relations

he biblical account of Creation ends in a surprising and some­
what abrupt way: “And the man and his wife were both naked,
and were not ashamed” (Gen. 2:25,
n a sb ) .
The story of God’s wonder-
filled actions during that entire week shifts now from an existential to
an ontological mode. Instead of reporting God’s activity, it concludes
with a description of the inner condition of the first pair: naked, yet
not ashamed. In the first part of this essay, we examine some biblical
categories of human states relevant to our subject of human sexuality,
and more precisely to homosexuality: innocence, guilt, and shame. In
the second part, we explore the ways in which the Christian church, as
well as society at large, can relate in a more neighborly and healing way
to a person with a homosexual condition.

INNOCENCE
While at the first glance it may seem that Adam and Eve reacted to
each other’s nakedness in n shameless fashion, exposing themselves and
