Homosexuality and the Bible:
What Is at Stake in the Current Debate
Richard M. Davidson

mid the vigorous debate over homosexuality and the Bible, it
may be tempting for some to ask, “What is all the fuss about?”
Isn’t it only a wrangling over a couple of passages in the obscure book
of Leviticus and how they apply today? It doesn’t seem that impor
tant. Isn’t it only a matter of quibbling over definitions of marriage?
After all, gay unions already have legal protection and virtually the
same rights as married couples in many places. What’s the big deal if
we call these unions “marriage”? Isn’t this whole debate, in the words
of the Bard, “much ado about nothing”? The question certainly de
mands a straightforward answer, so I would simply reply that there
are fundamental biblical and theological issues at stake.
