“Keep it simple.” That was the clear message I heard over and over
again from computer users back in the year 2000. We were redesign
ing our Michigan Information Technology Services Division (ITSD)
website, and our talented and enthusiastic Web development team
had visions of bells and whistles—and complexity. We had just suc
cessfully navigated the “Y2K” (Year 2000) computer bug, and the
new possibilities with technology seemed endless.
But our Department of Management and Budget customer in
terviews brought us back to reality. “Answer the basic questions
with fewer clicks”was our real challenge. “Get rid of complicated
acronyms and hard-to-find content. Drop the organizational charts
and give us helpful information we need now.” So we changed
course and ended up with a customer-focused website that was
centered on simple themes like: “My PC, My Consultant, My Con
